I’ve noticed that when it comes to making sacrifices we choose not to. But why is that? It’s because most of us are addicts to eating, drugs, alcohol, and sex. After reading the Bible and studying communications I’ve always had a very unsettling feeling in my heart. Something never felt right about living in a culture that embraces finessing men and women, overeating chicken wings at Hooters while lusting after the waitresses, and going to strip clubs, bars, and looking a pornography to “feel better”, or engaging in casual sex. So what happened when I decided to just opt out of this culture? My spirit became whole again.
The world teaches a dangerous ideology which is referred to as Y.O.L.O. (You only live once) This means we must “live a little” because life is short, however, there isn’t any mention of right from wrong and absolutely nothing about self-control. With that being said, is the world teaching us to “die slowly”? Seems to me it is! For instance, young black artists like Jermaine Stewart and Eazy E are a couple of examples of being in this toxic world. Jermaine Stewart died of AIDS-related liver cancer on March 17, 1997 and on March 26, 1995, Eazy -E died from AIDS-induced pneumonia, one month after his diagnosis.
Do you see the correlation here? Two great black men who each didn’t make 40 years old died because our society teaches men, especially black men to be loose with their dicks. Which is why you’ll often hear other lost and confused men saying:
- You only live once
- Use it or lose it
- How you gon’ know what to do when you get married?
Sex is supposed to be enjoyed in the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:18). Proverbs 21:17 NIV states that, “Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich. Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich. He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: He that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.”
You’d think that all because those men had the riches of this sick world that they were good right? That if they were just more careful and used condoms they’d be good right? Wrong and Wrong. They were both broken spiritually. When you worship pleasure as your main god it does not matter how rich you are. Mark 8:36 states NIV, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” When I used to live a life in sexual sin I didn’t know who I was. I put on a front because it was easy.
In this world we are taught it’s best to “follow the crowd” then to “follow God’s word”. Well I’m here to tell you that everything that you’ve been longing for will never satisfy you, especially any form of pleasure. Many great men and other pastors such as Bishop Eddie Long,Ted Haggard, Fred Phelps and many more become fools by thinking they could outwit God. However, whatever is done in the dark eventually comes to the light.
Now let’s change gears and talk about food addiction. Nothing makes me sicker than this culture that embraces overeating. The world will have you believe that if you can continue in your unhealthy eating habits and take a weight loss pill to be skinny. Detox drinks do not work, Tummy tea is stupid, and any other weight loss tactics the world has told you is all stupid! How foolish can you be? Your food addiction has caused your flesh to give in every single time. Food addiction has you convinced that you’ll never lose weight, you’re just big-boned, and that it’s too much. However, nothing is impossible with God on your side. With God you always have enough food. I don’t care what your food addiction tells you, with Him you will have enough. Psalm 78:17-19 “Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved. They even spoke against God himself, saying, “God can’t give us food in the wilderness.” Meditate on this!
Proverbs 23: 19-21 NIV states, “Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path: Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” Pay attention to “gorge themselves”, whether it’s excess meat or vegan junk food eating too much has a price. Think about it! When’s the last time you went on a binge eating spree and felt miserable, depressed, or anxious. That’s the price you pay every single time. Some of you are parents that follow this blog. Ask yourself, what does your son/daughter think about you when yet again you tell them, “I’m too tired!” when they want to play outside with you!
We need to understand that our temple was brought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). How dare we sit here and stuff our faces because we refuse to cook, discipline ourselves, and connect with the Most High. When we give into this world we do ourselves a disservice and we smack God in the face every single time with our rebellious ways.
So what now? I pumped you all up using scripture, personal examples, and celebrities to rally the troops. So what now? The answer isn’t as complex as you’ve been taught, we just need to ask ourselves, what does God really think of me? If you have not been living a life in accordance with scripture I’m not here to beat you up but to educate you on how your flesh is damaging your spirit.
It’s time to live a life of holiness because you aren’t getting any younger and God is trying to get your attention. If you can’t control yourself and give into your flesh easily you are an addict! Addiction is a disease and you can’t beat it without the Father. Yes, the 12 step program is great, working out is awesome, making more money will make things easier, fellow shipping with others will eliminate self-isolation, and overall, being more optimistic will gravitate others to you. However, you are nothing without God. Humble yourself among Him and repent for your sins. The voice in your head that says, “I don’t think God wants to hear me!” This is a lie from the devil. You must sit down and talk to Him because he wants to help you. However, how can He help you if you believe you don’t have a problem? If you lean to your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) how can you hear God’s voice?
